(MPI) – At the press conference announcing socio-economic statistics of 2016 held by the General Statistics Office (GSO) under the MPI on December 28th 2016, Director General of the GSO, Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam informed that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2016 was estimated to increase by 6.21% from 2015, of which it increased by 5.48% in the first quarter; 5.78% in the second quarter; 6.56% in the third quarter; and 6.68% in the fourth quarter.

Although having many difficulties and challenges in 2016, the socio-economic situation of Vietnam showed the positive changes and achieved important results. Of the growth rate of the whole economy,the sector of agriculture, forestry and fishery went up by 1.36%, this was the lowest growth rate since 2011, contributed 0.22 percentage points to the general growth; the sector of industry and construction moved up by 7.57%, lower than the growth rate of 9.64% in the previous year, contributed 2.59 percentage points; the service sector raised by 6.98%, contributed 2.67 percentage points. Macro economy was stable; inflation was curbed; money market and banking activities had positive performance; interest rate and exchange rate were stable. Business environment was clearly improved; the number of newly-established enterprises and enterprises re-operated raised highly; attraction of international visitors reached 10 million visitors. Fields of labor, employment and social security were interested in implementation and achieved certain results.
2017 is a very important year, pivotal year for the implementation of the 5-year economic development plan 2016-2020. There are many favorable factors for socio-economic development, such as continuously-recovered economy, favorable business environment creating confidence for the enterprise community, basically stable macro economic situation, curbed inflation. To well complete the goals and indicators of socio-economic development for 2017 adopted by the National Assembly, of which GDP increases by 6.7%; average growth rate of CPI is about 4%; total export turnover grows by about 6-7%, the levels, sectors and localities must be properly and fully aware of difficulties, challenges ahead in order to timely give solutions for overcoming right from early days and months of 2017.
Also in the framework of the press conference, the GSO announced the preliminary results of the 2016 rural, agricultural and fishery census. Final results of this census will be announced in the third quarter of 2017 with the detailed and adequate statistical indicators system and intensive analysis through many forms such as publications, CD, website, etc./.
