Minister Dung stated that agriculture is always considered a vital and advantageous sector in Vietnam, including favourable natural conditions and resources that allow the country to develop a diverse agricultural industry across various crop structures and livestock.

Vietnam has become one of the world’s major exporters of agricultural products. The total export turnover of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries last year reached over 53 billion USD, with a record trade surplus of 12 billion USD, up 43%. In the first six months of 2024, the export turnover of agricultural and aquatic products reached over 29 billion USD, a rise of 20% year-on-year.

Despite these achievements, the development of Vietnam's agriculture remains unsustainable with a tendency for growth to slow. Production and business organisation primarily relies on small farm households, lacking in connectivity; the quality and efficiency of the cooperative economic sector remain low.

The number of enterprises investing in rural agriculture remains small, at about 1.3% of the total with the majority being small and medium-sized enterprises limited by manpower, financial resources, science and technology, market development capabilities, and raw material regions.

Minister Dung emphasised that in the context of deep integration into the global economy, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is affecting many sectors, especially agriculture, presenting both significant opportunities and challenges.

He said it is important to shift from traditional farming to agro-economic, develop efficient agriculture based on high technology and focus on new seeds with better quality, transitioning to organic and clean products and reorganising production structures and supply chains to meet green and sustainable standards while ultimately enhancing the economic value per unit area of land used.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) is implementing a project called Technical facilities and business incubation to support SMEs in the Northern region in the field of agricultural products and food (CAFI), aiming to build an innovative agricultural ecosystem to enhance value-added and competitiveness for Vietnamese agriculture.

Prof. Dr. Thai Dong Soan shared experiences in changing agricultural practices and steps toward sustainable agriculture in Taiwan (China) over the past 30 years. He emphasised the unique features and advantages of Vietnam’s agriculture, including strategic directions in developing the sector toward food safety agriculture, focusing particularly on crop varieties that are suitable for local environmental, soil, and climatic conditions.

He pointed out that instead of focusing on quantity, emphasis is on quality, transitioning to organic and safe agriculture, conserving ecosystems, reducing costs for citizens, minimising environmental impacts, selling products at higher prices, and improving the livelihoods of farmers.

On this occasion, Minister Dung presented the insignia “For the cause of Vietnam’s planning and investment sector” to Prof. Dr. Thai Dong Soan and Wu Pin-Chen, Chairman of Vietnam - Taiwan Business Association to acknowledge their contribution in the process of building and developing the sector./.
