Minister Nguyen Chi Dung receives with Minister, President of COP26
(MPI) - On February 14th, 2022, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Minister Nguyen Chi Dung had a meeting with Alok Kumar Sharrma, Minister, President of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) who was paying a visit in Vietnam.

British Ambassador to Vietnam Gareth Ward, members of Delegation and leaders of relevant units under the MPI also attended at the meeting.

As stated by Minister Nguyen Chi Dung, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh made a 2050 net zero commitment in Vietnam at COP26 in Glasgow. This is a challenge as well as a great opportunity for the sustainable development of the whole country and industries and fields, especially energy. This commitment of Vietnam will advance a greener and more economies sustainably.

Immediately after the COP26 Conference, the MPI had organized a survey to show Vietnam’s commitments to strategies, master plans, socio-economic development plans, sectoral and field planning. The Government has also directed Ministries and line ministries to update commitments to their respective sectors.

Regarding the Green Growth Strategy, Vietnam has made strong commitments and the MPI has been studying and reviewing the goals and targets in accordance with the commitments at COP26. And with its role as the agency in charge of mobilizing climate finance resources, the MPI welcomes appropriate financing mechanisms established by international financial organizations and institutions under the COP.

Minister Nguyen Chi Dung hoped that Mr. Alok Sharma would continue to be a connection between Vietnam and well-known businesses, corporations, investors, investment funds of the UK as well as developed countries to support Vietnam in financial resources to fulfil its commitments as well as invest in the fields transformedin Vietnamquickly and sustainably, especially in energy.

The MPI will continue to coordinate with other agencies of the Government to implement specifically Vietnam’s commitments within the scope of its functions, tasks and powers in the coming time. The ministry will advise and arrange necessary resources for Vietnam to participate with international financial institutions and foreign mobilized resources to realize its goals at COP26 and set goals in Vietnam’s Green Growth Strategy.

At the meeting, COP President Alok Kumar Sharrma highly appreciated the commitments made by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at COP26 and the orientations of Vietnam’s Green Growth Strategy. Vietnam’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050 was an important factor to improve the economy’s competitiveness, attract investment and accessibility to more climate finance as Vietnam was willing to accept loans.

COP President Alok Kumar Sharrma affirmed his willingness to share experiences with Vietnam in implementing commitments at COP 26 and promote financial support towards green projects, global adaptation targets and investment for a green economy./.
