Deputy Minister Dong hailed Meta’s active contributions to the innovation and digital transformation activities in Vietnam. He asked Meta to play a crucial role in the country’s digital acceleration, digital economy, innovation in business and digital security. He also suggested Meta increase training activities on innovation and digital transformation for business community, especially those of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), which are currently over 800,000 SMEs in Vietnam.
Frankel said that Meta’s focus on supporting Vietnam is to build an innovation ecosystem and develop the country’s digital economy by supporting SMEs in digital transformation. Meta trained over 64,000 SMEs and 580 thousand students across all provinces and cities in Vietnam from 2017 to 2021.
At the meeting, the two sides compared notes on the cooperation agreement between the National Innovation Centre (NIC) and Meta in order to bolster innovation and digital transformation for businesses. This cooperation agreement was signed in May 2022 within the framework of MPI Minister Nguyen Chi Dung’s visit with Vietnamese Prime Minister to attend the ASEAN-US Special Summit in Washington DC. The agreement includse: (i) Promoting innovation to support economic recovery phase; (ii) Enhancing NIC’s capacity to become a leading innovation hub in the region; (iii) Organizing annual national programmes to seek innovative solutions for the sustainable development of Vietnam; (iv) Training innovation and digital skills programmes for SMEs and the disadvantaged community.
The two sides are committed to carrying out the anual Vietnam Innovation Challenge from 2022, which is under the MPI’s direction. Vietnam Innovation Challenge aims to search for innovative solutions from both domestic and international individuals/organizations to resolve current challenges, towards the prosperity and sustainability of Vietnam.
Thao Griffiths, director for Public Policy for Vietnam shared that Meta, and other US businesses such as Google and Amazon affirmed their close coordination with the NIC, the Ministry of Planning and Ivestment to support innovation ecosystems and innovative enterprises in Vietnam, contributing to bringing Vietnam as a leading innovation center in the ASEAN region./.
