(MPI) - The Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) in collaboration with Siemens Electronic Design Automation (Siemens EDA) in Hanoi on February 29 organised conference on developing human resource for semiconductor IC design - Vietnam 2024. On this occasion, the National Innovation Center (NIC), MPI and Siemens EDA signed a memorandum on cooperation to develop the semiconductor ecosystem in Vietnam.

Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Duy Dong highlighted the potential and opportunities for developing Vietnam’s semiconductor industry ecosystem. The Vietnamese Government is particularly focused on enhancing investment cooperation and developing the semiconductor industry in Vietnam, with a plan to develop human resources aiming to form a workforce of 50,000 engineers for this industry by 2030.

“The signing of the MoU between NIC and Siemens EDA and the licensing of Siemens’ semiconductor design software to universities is a practical activity,” he noted. The cooperation between the government, enterprise and educational institutions are becoming more in-depth, gradually developing semiconductor human resources through training programmes, technology transfer, tool and software support, and technical assistance, contributing to the goal of achieving 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030.

Nina Lin, Vice president and General manager for Taiwan and South Asia region, Siemens EDA emphasised that this is a crucial time for cooperation between Siemens and the Vietnamese government, ministries, and sectors to support accelerating innovation for enterprises, building an industrial ecosystem, and developing training for the semiconductor industry.

Siemens EDA is ready to cooperate with Vietnamese agencies, especially the MPI, to promote the semiconductor electronics industry. She also stated that Siemens EDA would sponsor Vietnam with Siemens’ most advanced chip design software and circuit boards through NIC and will provide training services and support NIC in promoting the development of semiconductor design human resources in particular and the semiconductor electronics industry in general.

At this event, NIC and Siemens EDA awarded the sponsored software to universities tasked with training human resources for the semiconductor industry by the government.

Vietnam’s strategic location, the shift in production, and the trend of diversifying the global supply chain have brought Vietnam the opportunity to become a key player in the global supply chain restructuring process. However, high-quality human resources for the semiconductor industry remain a challenge for Vietnam. The collaboration between MPI’s NIC and Siemens EDA to untangle the human resource knot will contribute to realizing Vietnam’s “semiconductor” dream and elevating the national semiconductor ecosystem./.
